Leonard Fournette is actively seeking a new team before the regular season kicks off, and he’s scheduled a visit with the Colts today, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Fournette spent part of last season with the Bills but had limited action, recording just 12 carries. After being inactive during the wild-card playoff game, he was released from Buffalo’s practice squad before the divisional round. Since then, he’s been without a team, leading him to switch agents this summer in hopes of finding a new opportunity.
Despite his efforts, Fournette has yet to attract interest this offseason. If today’s visit with the Colts leads to a contract, he could add valuable experience to their backfield. The 29-year-old running back has two 1,000-yard rushing seasons and productive years as a starter in Tampa Bay in 2021 and 2022. However, his value has diminished recently.
The Colts’ depth chart features Jonathan Taylor as the primary running back, but the backup situation is less certain. With Zack Moss leaving in free agency, Taylor will need to stay healthy and handle a heavy workload during the final year of his $42 million extension, which includes guaranteed salary. Indianapolis also has Trey Sermon (who has struggled with a hamstring injury this summer) and Tyler Goodson (who saw limited action last season) as options. Evan Hull was cut last week but is now back on the practice squad.
Mike Chappell of Fox59 reports that Fournette is one of several players the Colts are evaluating today. It remains to be seen if any of these workouts will lead to a deal before Week 1. With over $15 million in cap space, the Colts could afford a budget-friendly signing for Fournette or other players.
