The Tennessee Titans have officially released veteran safety Jamal Adams, honoring his request for a release on Thursday. Adams, a three-time Pro Bowler, had signed a one-year deal with the Titans in July after being cut by the Seattle Seahawks. The move to Tennessee reunited Adams with defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson, who had been his defensive backs coach when Adams was drafted by the New York Jets as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Despite the promising reunion, Adams’ time with the Titans was short-lived. He appeared in only three games, logging a total of 20 snaps, and his involvement steadily diminished. After playing two snaps in his debut against the Jets in Week 2 and 17 snaps the following week against the Green Bay Packers, Adams’ playing time dropped to just one snap against the Miami Dolphins in Week 4. His frustration reached a boiling point, prompting him to ask for a release. However, Adams clarified that his frustration wasn’t about not being a starter, but rather a lack of opportunity to contribute meaningfully on the field.
Titans defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson commented on the situation, stating, “At this point, wish Jamal all the best going forward, it just didn’t work out here. He’ll have great success wherever he goes.”
One key factor in Adams’ limited playing time was his absence from practice due to a lingering hip injury, which had sidelined him for much of training camp. The Titans placed Adams on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list last weekend before making the decision to release him.
Despite the unfortunate outcome in Tennessee, Adams expressed confidence in his health and readiness to contribute to a new team. As a veteran defensive back with notable experience and talent, Adams will likely draw interest from other teams seeking to bolster their secondary.
The Titans, meanwhile, continue their preparations for Sunday’s matchup against the Buffalo Bills as they adjust to life without Adams.
