Understanding NFL Point Spreads
The NFL point spread is one of the most common types of football betting.
The spread gives the favored team a designated number of points that it must win by for a bet on that team to cover. The underdog receives those points.
For example, if the Seattle Seahawks are listed at -3.5 against the New England Patriots, Seattle must win by at least four points for a bet on the Seahawks to cover the spread. A wager on New England would win if the Patriots win the game outright or lose by three points or fewer.
Point spreads are designed to make games between teams of different strengths more competitive from a betting perspective.

NFL Moneyline Betting
A moneyline bet is a straight wager on which team will win the game.
Unlike a point-spread wager, there is no requirement for the favorite to win by a certain number of points. The team simply needs to win.
NFL moneyline odds are generally displayed using American odds. A favorite is shown with a negative number, while an underdog is shown with a positive number.
For example:
- Favorite -150: A $150 wager would produce a $100 profit.
- Underdog +130: A $100 wager would produce a $130 profit.
Moneyline prices can vary between sportsbooks, which is one reason comparing NFL betting lines can be useful.

NFL Over/Under Betting
The over/under, also called the total, is a wager on the combined number of points scored by both teams.
Suppose an NFL game has a total of 45.5 points.
A bettor taking the Over needs the two teams to combine for 46 or more points. A bettor taking the Under needs the combined score to be 45 points or fewer.
