Justin Herbert is set to start Week 1 for the Los Angeles Chargers after recovering from a foot injury that sidelined him during August. The quarterback made it clear he’s healthy, despite not disclosing the exact nature of his injury. Though there were reports suggesting Herbert had suffered a plantar fascia injury in late July, he refuted those claims, choosing to keep the details private.
Herbert, spotted wearing a walking boot in early August, missed several practices but returned just before the start of the season. When asked about the injury, Herbert explained, “It’s a personal thing that I’d like to keep to myself and the doctors.” According to Herbert, the injury didn’t happen in one specific moment but developed gradually over time, leading to soreness that required management.
The fifth-year quarterback acknowledged that while the injury has improved, he’ll need to stay proactive with treatment throughout the season. This includes routine rehabilitation and icing to ensure the issue doesn’t flare up as the campaign progresses. However, Herbert downplayed the injury’s impact on his game, stating, “It’s not really on my mind right now. As long as we’re out in front of it, I think it’ll be all right.”
Herbert’s injury emerged during a crucial time for the Chargers’ offense, which is already missing key wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. Despite these setbacks, the team has taken steps to reinforce its quarterback depth by signing veteran Taylor Heinicke and retaining backup Easton Stick.
After being limited to 13 games last season due to a finger injury, both Herbert and the Chargers are aiming for a full 17-game season in 2024. With his foot injury behind him, the franchise QB is poised to lead the team in its opening game, signaling optimism for a strong start to the season.
