Ja’Marr Chase’s Hold-In Strategy and Contract Talks Keep Bengals in Limbo

Ja’Marr Chase, the All-Pro wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, continues to juggle between practicing and holding in as he pushes for a contract extension. After sitting out for weeks, Chase returned to practice Wednesday in what was his first game-week workout of the season. However, there’s still uncertainty about his availability for Week 1, as Chase left practice early. His participation on Thursday could be a stronger indicator of his readiness for the season opener.

Chase is seeking a contract in the range of Justin Jefferson’s recent extension, but negotiations are complicated by the Bengals’ reluctance to adopt the guarantee-heavy structures seen in Jefferson’s $110 million deal or CeeDee Lamb’s $100 million contract. Despite Bengals owner Mike Brown acknowledging Chase as the team’s top player outside of Joe Burrow, the organization has hinted that a 2025 contract extension might be more feasible. However, there have been recent reports that the team has ramped up efforts to get a deal done for Chase, possibly looking to avoid a lengthy standoff.

Interestingly, Burrow commented that Chase is “ready to play,” although he stopped short of confirming his teammate’s Week 1 availability. The Bengals have listed Chase as a limited practice participant, officially citing rest as the reason. Some speculate that a “mysterious injury” could give Chase a reason to sit out if a new contract isn’t in place by Sunday.

Meanwhile, other teams are dealing with wide receiver-related scenarios. Jahan Dotson of the Washington Commanders reportedly clashed with former offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, raising questions about his future with the team. On a related note, several teams have shown interest in Dotson amid uncertainty in Washington’s receiving corps beyond Terry McLaurin. Elsewhere, Stefon Diggs hinted at a desire to be traded from the Buffalo Bills before ultimately landing with the Texans, shedding light on his offseason dissatisfaction.

As Week 1 approaches, the outcome of these contract negotiations and personnel shifts will shape the season ahead for these star wideouts and their teams.
